Keep your skin looking younger, and lower your risk of skin cancer!
Our usual sunscreen habits protect our skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays from the outside in.
But, you can also protect your skin from the inside out!
In fact a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of dermatology supports that by saying that certain vitamins help to protect our skin. And what I discovered is that many of the same foods that can boost defenses against skin cancer will also help the skin looking younger, smoother and free from wrinkles 🙂
Eating more vitamin C –rich foods will help to decrease age related dryness, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2007. The smoothing effects of vitamin C may be due to its ability to clear up free radicals produced from ultraviolet rays and also its role in collagen synthesis, which keeps skin firm. Vitamin C is essential for collagen production.
You can find vitamin C in so many cosmetic products. But why don’t you go straight to the source?? 😉
Plus all sources of vitamin C are really tasty! You can find it in: Strawberries, oranges, pineapples, papayas, broccoli and red peppers.
I am a coffee lover and so are many like me! And it’s good to know that drinking coffee may lower our risk of developing skin cancer. Decaf didn’t seem to offer the same protection, European Journal of Cancer Prevention.
So caffeine in both coffee and tea is the protective ingredient.
Caffeine basically kills precancerous and ultraviolet-damaged skin cells by blocking a protein that they need to divide.
Keep in mind that the effects of caffeine on skin are modest so it is a reason to enjoy drinking coffee if you already do, not to start drinking too much!
Consuming more lycopene, the carotenoid that makes tomatoes red and give pink grapefruit and watermelon a pink red color, keeps your skin smooth, soft and protects it from sunburn.
Lycopene is not the only carotenoid that protects your skin from UV damage. Others include lutein found in corn, spinach, squash, pumpkin, egg yolks, sweet potatoes and carrots
Soy foods, including edemame, tofu and soy milk, very rich in isoflavones, help to preserve skin-firming collagen which begins to decline with age.
Isoflavones help prevent collagen breakdown
Like vitamin C and Lycopene, isoflavones also act like antioxidants to neutralize free radicals caused by sun exposure.
The omega 3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA, found in fatty fish like tuna, salmon, sardines help to prevent skin cancer by reducing inflammatory compounds that can promote tumor growth. Plus omega 3 keeps your skin looking young by preserving collagen.
So try to eat 3 servings of salmon each week. Not only it is good for your skin but fir your heart as well 🙂
Although we all use those skin- saving lotions, creams and sunscreens, but still adding more of these foods to our diet is necessary.
AND OF COURSE DON’T FORGET TO DRINK A LOT OF WATER!
