When I was in high school, I still remember my dad how he used to put broccoli in every salad or meal he used to have!
I was always asking him why does he do that, why is it always broccoli??
My day reads a lot about nutrition and health, so he told me that broccolli has lots of vitamins that you can’t find in other veggies, and one good thing about it, is that even cooked broccoli can be as nutritious as raw ones!
And after being a dietitian, I’ll have to agree with him on that point!
Broccoli is a member of cabbage family.
Originally, it is an Italian name “Broccollo”, which means “cabbage sprouts”
Now back to its health benefits, broccoli offers a list of health values essential for everyone!
1- Protects against cancer:
Broccoli contains the phytonutrients sulforaphane and indoles, which have anti- cancer effects and prevent tumor development, especially for breast, bladder, prostate, and ovarian cancer.
2- Detoxifies the whole body:
The photochemicals found in broccoli increase enzymes production, involved in the cleansing process. So they flush harmful compounds out of the body.
3- Makes your bones stronger:
This sound weird!
But in fact, one cup of broccoli contains 72mg of calcium, 123 mg of Vitamin C and 40 calories!
Other vegetables and fruits have only Vitamin C, with zero calcium.
And dairy products have only calcium with zero vitamin C, and surely more and more calories!
4- Essential for pregnant women:
One cup of broccoli has 94 mcg of folic acid, which is a must for pregnant women for birth defects problems.
If you are pregnant, be sure to eat broccoli!!
5- Increase immunity:
In one study, University of California, researchers found that DIM, a chemical produced when broccoli is chewed and digested, enhanced the immunity response to mice.
Researchers have since found that eating broccoli, rich in antioxidant sulforaphane, may actually be an excellent natural remedy for the entire immune system.
Take a look into the nutrition facts of cooked broccoli:
You will see the number of vitamins it still contain even after you cook it for only 43 calories!!
I
Everyone has its own taste!
personally, I steam broccoli in the microwave for about 3 minutes, then wait until it cools a bit and becomes crunchy.
Then I dip it into light runch sauce mixed with light yogurt.
You can also try to dip it in light creamy cheese.
Yummy!! Try it! 😀
