Nutrition for Peptic Ulcer

Let me first start to define what's an ulcer.

Stomach Ulcer or Peptic Ulcer  is a small sore in the lining of the stomach. Once this sore occurs, acidic gastric juices will be produced which will lead to Ulcer.

Why??

Researches estimate that up to 70 % of the world population that have ulcer is infected with H. Pylori bacteria, which lives in the lining of the stomach.

Another cause of ulcer is the use of  Non- Steroidal Anti- Inflammatory drugs   (NSAID s),  like Aspirin.

Ulcer can affect men and women at any age!

Be Careful!!

Certain foods tend to increase pain due to ulcer and to increase  acid production in the digestive tract.

That's why You have to:

- Restrict those foods that may cause irritation to the digestive tract.

- Reduce the acid production.

- Prevent the unpleasant side effects like heartburn.

How??

1-  Eat 5 to 6 small meals a day instead of 3 large meals. Overeating will put a load on your stomach and will make you feel uncomfortable.

2- Eat a diet rich in fiber especially from fruits and vegetables like carrots, cabbage, apricots, red apples and bananas.

3-  Eat slowly and chew food very well.

4- You need to chose low- fat food products. Fat in food will cause indigestion and will cause more production of acid juices in the digestive tract.

5- Avoid fried foods.

6-  Do not drink: Coffee, tea, alcohol, soft drinks, citrus fruit juices ( kiwi, pineapple, orange, green apple, strawberry).

7- Avoid foods that are spicy. Spices Will produce  acid in the stomach.

8-  Add omega-3 into your diet! Omega-3 helps in the production of prostaglandins, compounds that protect the lining of the stomach, and the entire digestive passage.

9-  Do not lay down after eating. When you do so, acid will go all the way up, and will cause heartburn.

REMARK!!

Do not hesitate to visit your doctor.

The first step is to get a correct diagnosis.

Changing  your diet alone will not treat severe ulcers, that's why your doctor must prescribe specific medications.
